Creating my next Celtic Design
This week I have decided to focus a lot of my spare time on sketching for both up coming projects and to improve my drawing skills. So each day I will try to produce 1-2 sketches.
This morning’s sketch is focusing on designing a dragon & trinity knot for my Celtic Design collection. Dragons have a significant place in Celtic methodology and art.
In this post I am giving a sneak preview of how I start the design process. For these sorts of designs I use good old maths tools to help along with my freehand ability.
As you can tell from my art my Celtic knots are still developing but I figure the more I practice and create the better they will get.
Here are my basic steps (once I have an idea of what I might like to create) see images below for details.
Design a simple Dragons head that will be easier to paint.
Get out the old maths set and create the background
Working on those tricky Celtic knots
Freehand the rest of my design changing it with rubber and pencil until I am happy
The draft sketch not yet finalised but gives me a good idea of where to improve for the actual art piece. This will be my template but will get changed slightly as that is natural for me.
